Dangerous Sounds – a podcast about the Danish American jazz connection to be released

As a result of great international interest in the Danish DR podcast “Farlige Toner – The Story of Danish Jazz,” an English version titled “Dangerous Sounds” is now being launched.

Jazz Danmark Launches Dangerous Sounds in the USA

In collaboration with Jazz Danmark, the American NPR-affiliated radio station WRTI will dedicate its airwaves to Danish jazz in March and April 2022. With the release of eight tailor-made episodes based on the popular Danish jazz podcast Farlige Toner (Dangerous Sounds), stories about Danish jazz will flow from the speakers to the American audience.

Osgood and Joan as Police Woman Tell the Story

Drummer Kresten Osgood returns as the host, joined by the American musician Joan as Police Woman, who helps tell stories about Louis Armstrong’s legendary visit to Copenhagen, Svend Asmussen’s Gestapo adventure, Tchicai, Mazur, and Mikkelborg’s explorations in new jazz territories. The podcast will also touch on contemporary Danish jazz, which is more vibrant than ever.

The launch of the podcast on WRTI will also be celebrated with live concerts and talks, including performances at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville and Ars Nova in Philadelphia.

The Story of Jazz in Denmark

In 2020, DR released the podcast Farlige Toner, where host Kresten Osgood, in a series of 17 episodes, explores how American music helped shape society and the music we listen to today. From the time when banjos and saxophones were seen as a threat to the bourgeoisie, to the 1950s and 60s when Denmark became an epicenter for jazz, the podcast chronicles 100 years of jazz history in Denmark. It explores how the “dangerous tones” of jazz have always been intertwined with sex, racism, indignation, and drugs, all the way to today, where the music continues to thrive.

International Recognition

In addition to receiving rave reviews in several major newspapers and winning the Danish Prix Radio award in both 2020 and 2021, Farlige Toner earned international recognition at Europe’s largest radio award, Prix Europa 2020, with a nomination for Best Music Program.

American musician Joan As Police Woman serves as the narrator in the Dangerous Sounds podcast.
