A Celebration of Icons, Rising Talent, and High-Energy Jazz
Gitte Hænning: A living legend and one of Denmark’s greatest musical exports, Gitte Hænning has left her mark on the music scene since the 1950s, creating timeless evergreens and starring in numerous films. However, her true passion has always been jazz. At DMA Jazz 2022, she will perform alongside the local powerhouse Aarhus Jazz Orchestra. Known for their innovative concert formats and eclectic collaborations, the orchestra has worked with prominent artists like Kurt Elling, John Scofield, and Girls in Airports.
Teitur & Aarhus Jazz Orchestra: Joining the program is the Faroese artist Teitur, one of the most versatile singers and composers of the past two decades. Both beloved by fans and critically acclaimed, Teitur’s songs have been recorded by Seal, he has collaborated with Van Dyke Parks, composed film scores, and released numerous albums. Last year, Teitur and Aarhus Jazz Orchestra played to a sold-out crowd at Musikhuset, and they now reunite for an unforgettable performance at DMA Jazz.
Smag På Dig Selv: The young Copenhagen trio promises a high-octane performance, bringing their blend of jazz-punk and acoustic techno to the grand stage. With two saxophones, a drum kit, wild grooves, and anarchistic energy, they’ve wowed audiences at Roskilde Festival and Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Expect the unexpected from one of DMA Jazz’s most surprising acts.
Lilly feat. Gilad Hekselman: Offering an intimate counterpoint, Danish vocalist Lilly joins forces with acclaimed New York guitarist Gilad Hekselman to interpret timeless standards. Their album Tenderly received international praise, including recognition as one of the “Top 5 Best Vocal Releases of 2017” by The New York City Jazz Record. Fresh from tours in South Korea and Japan, the duo will bring their world-class artistry to Aarhus.
Bévort 3: Saxophonist Pernille Bévort’s trio continues the legacy of tenor sax-led trios inspired by legends like Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson. Known for their dynamic and melodic take on jazz, Bévort 3 promises to deliver Danish jazz at its finest.
døssing: This sibling band from Aarhus brings a dreamy yet danceable sound to the stage, drawing inspiration from cinematic universes. Earlier this year, their debut album All Inclusive was named Album of the Week by P8 Jazz. døssing is a rising star, making them a must-watch addition to the program.
Bjarke & the Beerbellys: Wrapping up the evening, this playful project led by versatile trumpeter Bjarke Nikolajsen breathes new life into traditional jazz. With a cheeky nod to its name, the band will provide a lively finale to the event with their energy and charm.
