What was supposed to be two final concerts has now become one winner concert with an award ceremony, as the competing final band Skou-Due/Kaptain/Schiødt/Loeb/Nielsen has withdrawn from this year’s competition. The prize and the accompanying 10,000 DKK will be presented on November 3, when Emil Savery Trio performs their winner concert at Dexter in Odense.

“I feel fantastic,” says the young jazz organist Emil Savery, whose trio has won the Jazz Competition 2020. “It’s a bit of an anticlimactic way to win, but I’m really happy because now we can afford to make an album. That was the goal,” says Emil Savery.

Final Delayed Multiple Times

The initial round of Jazzkonkurrencen was held in Aalborg in February, where four selected bands played for a spot in the next stage of the competition. Four became three in Aalborg, and three became two in the competition’s second round in Kolding.

Since then, the final has been postponed several times. Most recently, the final was scheduled for October 21 at Jazzhus Montmartre but had to be canceled due to COVID-19 and the venue’s financial situation as a result of the pandemic. It is also due to these numerous delays that Skou-Due/Kaptain/Schiødt/Loeb/Nielsen ultimately decided to withdraw from the competition.

Competition for emerging jazz talents

Jazzkonkurrencen is JazzDanmark’s recurring contest for young, budding Danish jazz musicians. Musicians up to 30 years old have the opportunity to develop by performing on various stages across the country, receiving professional advice, recording their music, and gaining exposure on P8 Jazz.

The participating bands and musicians are assessed by a carefully selected jury, made up of both professional jazz musicians and industry experts.
