Girls take over rehearsal spaces all over Denmark to ten years running
From July 1st to 4th, you can find improvisation and jazz filling rehearsal spaces from Aalborg to Vordingborg as JazzCamp for Girls brings together hundreds of young girls in bands to learn improvisation and compose their own music. This year marks the 10th anniversary of JazzCamp for Girls, which first took place in 2014. Since then, the project has expanded far beyond Denmark’s borders to countries like Canada, England, Ireland, Belgium, Poland, Sweden, Finland, and Turkey. In Denmark, JazzCamp for Girls 2024 will be hosted at 11 music schools across the country.
“But perhaps the most important lesson for the students at Jazz Camp for Girls is that there is a place for them in jazz at all.”

Community and anti-perfectionism
The girls experience a fun and supportive community, where improvisation has proven to be an effective tool for teaching music to children. It also serves as an important counterbalance to the perfectionist culture many of the girls encounter in their daily lives.
Collaboration with 11 music schools across Denmark
In 2024, JazzCamp for Girls will be held at 11 music schools across Denmark: Aarhus Musikskole, Musikhøjskolen Frederiksberg, Holstebro Musikskole, Holbæk Kulturskole, Kulturskolen Kolding, Rytmisk Center København, Odense Musikskole, Den Kreative Skole in Silkeborg, Vordingborg Musikskole, Aalborg Kulturskole, and Kulturskolen Esbjerg.
JazzCamp for Piger is an internationally renowned succes
After achieving success in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland, and England, JazzCamp for Girls is now expanding far beyond Europe’s borders. In 2023, the project launched in both Canada and Turkey, and in 2024, the network will grow further with the addition of Handelsbeurs in Belgium. We are currently experiencing a high demand for JazzCamp for Girls, both in Denmark and abroad. It’s fantastic to see more people recognizing how improvisation and musical communities can significantly boost girls’ confidence and inspire them to take on rhythmic instruments in a band setting. This is exactly what we need to achieve better gender balance in music. Jazz offers a unique opportunity to break free from the perfectionist culture and explore one’s own creativity through unrestricted improvisation.
