JazzCamp for Girls and School Concerts in India

In November and December, Jazz Danmark’s India project reaches its peak as both JazzCamp for Girls and an extensive school concert tour take place in several major Indian metropolises

Networking Tour and School Concert Series

Throughout November and December, Danish saxophonist and India expert Lars Møller will embark on a tour across India. A key part of the trip includes a series of concerts with the Jazz Explorer Trio at schools and universities in Bangalore and Chennai, South India. These concerts are organized by SPIC MACAY, an organization dedicated to introducing classical Indian art and culture to children and youth, which is now aiming to include more jazz and Western classical music in its programming.

JazzCamp for Girls and a Danish-Indian Festival Concert in Kolkata

In collaboration with Jazzfest Kolkata and the Calcutta School of Music, JazzCamp for Girls is now being launched in the world’s largest democracy.

JazzCamp for Girls was initiated by JazzDanmark and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2014 to address the gender imbalance in contemporary music. Since then, it has expanded to eight countries both within and beyond Europe. We are proud to see the project now gaining a foothold in India, where significant barriers also exist for women pursuing music.

The Project in India is led by two experienced instructors from the Danish camp, Anne Efternøler and Cecilie Strange. Together with renowned Indian musicians Premjit Dutta and Debjit Mahalanobis, they will mentor 20 Indian girls, who will conclude the camp with a live performance. Following this, the four instructors will rehearse together to prepare a set, which they will perform on the outdoor stage of the Kolkata Jazz Festival as part of the festival’s Saturday program.

Both initiatives are organized in close collaboration with the Danish Cultural Institute in India. Locally, JazzCamp for Girls is coordinated by the organization Meta Arts as part of the educational program Jazz+, which is integrated into Jazzfest Kolkata.
