We can now unveil the three participants in the Jazz Competition 2024. The bands Musvit, Udsyn, and Vingborg/Valencia are ready to hit the road, performing concerts at four of Denmark’s renowned venues as part of the project. The concert series kicks off on February 16 at Huset in Hasserisgade, Aalborg, and tickets are now on sale.
Audiences can look forward to a glimpse into Denmark’s vibrant young jazz scene. The participating bands’ sounds push jazz towards new horizons, drawing influences from folk music, electronic music, and cinematic soundscapes. These performances will take place in Aalborg, Kolding, Odense, and Copenhagen. Alongside the concert series, the bands will take part in a developmental program designed to support their journey further into the music world. The Jazz Competition 2024 will culminate in a final at Jazzhus Montmartre, where a winner will be awarded DKK 10,000 for an upcoming project.

About the Participants
Musvit plays newly composed, genre-defying music inspired by elements from both traditional and more free-form jazz, as well as hip-hop, pop, and electronic music. The band members bring a variety of musical backgrounds and skills, which contribute to shaping the group’s unique sound. A sound that can be dry, wet, large, or small—but is always unmistakably their own.
Lineup:
- Ronja Rose Andersson – vocals, saxophone, and synth
- Teis Ortved – saxophone and keys
- Jacob Tjernström – double bass
- Adam Lorentzi – drums
Udsyn moves fluidly within the jazz genre, borrowing liberally from classical, electronic, and alternative styles to create a cinematic soundscape inspired by minimalism and Nordic tonal traditions.
The driving force behind Udsyn is the pursuit of creating organic atmospheres that can be felt and visualized. In a dynamic interplay of harmony, intimacy, and dissonance, the group conveys perspectives on life through musical spaces and worlds that invite you to lose yourself, explore, and perhaps find meaning.
Lineup:
- Morten Heide – synth
- Ole Røndal Kjeldsen – piano
- Johan Kjær Houver – double bass
- Marco Ceglarek – drums
- Viktor Ravn – guitar
Vingborg/Valencia has musical roots in jazz and folk music but ventures playfully into rock, pop, and ambient genres. Curiosity and a desire to create drive the group forward in their sensitive and playful sound. As a listener, you’re gently drawn in and enveloped by beautiful melodies, creative grooves, and engaging solos.
Niels Overgaard (Jazznyt.dk) writes about their debut album:
“They’re not trying to revolutionize anything, yet they end up doing so unintentionally. In their own quiet way, they bring Nordic jazz traditions and tones into a new era.”
Lineup:
- Hannah Vingborg – piano and keys
- Lasse Wagner – drums
- Emil Lund – electric bass
- Christian Valencia – guitar
The Jazz Competition is organized and conducted by JazzDanmark, in close collaboration with four partners: Huset in Aalborg, Jazz6000 in Kolding, Musikhuset Dexter in Odense, and Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen. The competition is primarily funded by the Gangsted Foundation.
