Saturday night, the groups Metroscope and Xhud dueled at a sold-out Jazzhus Montmartre for the title of winner of Jazzkonkurrencen 2021. By the end of the evening, it was Metroscope who could pop the champagne corks, receiving the audience’s applause and the 10,000 DKK first prize.

Sold-out finale in Copenhagen

A sold-out Jazzhus Montmartre hosted the third edition of JazzDanmark’s nationwide competition for jazz musicians, the Jazz Competition, on Saturday night. The evening’s final was an all-Aalborg showdown between the fusion quartet Metroscope and the lyrical guitar trio Xhud [ʃuːt].

After each finalist had given their best during the 45 minutes they had at their disposal, the evening’s jury announced Metroscope as the winner of Jazzkonkurrencen 2021.

The jury stated the following about the winner:

“The music reflects an impressive work ethic and determination, as well as a strong collective spirit. The jury was impressed by the high technical level and the complexity of the compositions. We believe that tonight’s winner has the potential to achieve great musical accomplishments.”

The final jury for the Jazzkonkurrencen consisted of guitarist Anna Rømer (KALEIIDO), drummer Daniel Sommer (OrgelDuo, Simon Eskildsen Trio, and more), and harmonica player Mathias Heise (Mathias Heise Quadrillion, among others).

This band is something we put all our energy into, so winning is a huge recognition for us. Especially because we sometimes feel that our music is a bit hard to place within the jazz genre, so it’s extra rewarding to be able to add the title of Jazzkonkurrencen winner to our CV. Our goal now is to create a follow-up to our debut album (which was released during Jazzkonkurrencen, ed.), and we also want to present our music to an international audience.

Both finalists will be able to perform at Jazzhus Montmartre in 2022, where they, along with the two other participants in Jazzkonkurrencen, will headline shows at the Copenhagen venue. You can read more about all the participants in Jazzkonkurrrencen here and follow the announcements of the Jazzkonkurrencen program at Jazzhus Montmartre here.

Jazzkonkurrencen was created in collaboration with the venues Huset i Hasserisgade, Jazz6000, and Jazzhus Montmartre. Additionally, we are pleased to once again have P8 Jazz on board as a media partner, providing finalists with exposure through the channel. Jazzkonkurrencen is supported by the Gangsted Foundation.
