New publication: Danish Music in Numbers 2024

Danish Music in Numbers 2024 presents insights into the Danish music scene, based on the ongoing work with data and analysis carried out by the genre organizations.

Today marks the release of Danish Music in Numbers 2024. This annual report presents a wealth of data-driven insights into the Danish music scene, based on the ongoing work of data collection and analysis carried out by the genre organizations Art Music Denmark, Jazz Danmark, ROSA and TEMPI.

The report takes the pulse of Denmark’s music life across genres and formats. This is the second year it has been published, and this edition includes meta-studies, methodological experiments, and mini-analyses. New this year, several articles are accompanied by interactive resources or open-source code.

Do we have to wait 181 years for gender balance in the music industry?

This year’s report covers a wide range of topics, including:

  • Do we have to wait 181 years for gender balance in music? A new projection based on Koda’s membership data shows that without significant intervention, true balance is still a long way off.

  • What is the state of music journalism in Danish newspapers? New data reveals that the number of music-related articles in national newspapers has been cut in half over the past decade.

  • How many grassroots music festivals are there in Denmark? A nationwide mapping identifies over 100 festivals driven by young cultural entrepreneurs across the country.

  • What have we learned from three culture and health projects? A meta-study of five follow-up research reports distills cross-cutting insights on how culture can support mental well-being among vulnerable groups.

The report is available in print and as a free digital version at www.musikdata.dk, where readers can also explore interactive maps, open-source tools, and supplementary datasets for a deeper dive into the numbers.

A tool for shaping the future of music

With this report, we aim to strengthen the knowledge base of the entire music ecosystem – and we hope it becomes a valuable resource for decision-makers, practitioners, researchers, and anyone interested in the conditions and development of music in Denmark.

Danish Music in Numbers 2024 was made possible with support from the Augustinus Foundation and core funding for the genre organizations from the Danish Arts Foundation.
