Summer Camp for young musicians
The Jazzdalen (Jazz Valley) Summer Camp is a music camp for young people under the age of 18 who want to spend a week of their summer vacation focused on music and ensemble playing. The instructors create the framework for a week filled with intensive practice in ensemble groups, improvisation, jam sessions, concerts, instrument geekery, inspiring talks, and plenty of fun and camaraderie.
For young jazz musicians
The purpose of Jazzdalen is to play a significant role in the development and gathering of young jazz musicians in Denmark, thus contributing to both the local music communities and the broader Danish “jazz map,” with equal representation of genders at all times. At Jazzdalen, it’s all about skills and community. Mastering the craft (the instrument, improvisation, and tradition) is a desirable quality that requires time and dedication. It demands a commitment to one’s fellow musicians to reach a high level. It’s important to show teenagers that it’s cool to have a unique skill—especially when it’s used in a strong community.
Jazzdalen was developed by drummer Kristoffer Juel in collaboration with JazzDanmark, building on a long Danish tradition of jazz camps like the Brandbjerg Jazz Camp, Vallekilde Jazz Camp (later Summer Session), and the Engelsholm Camp. This tradition ties the folk high school spirit together with the free framework of jazz, where authority among both participants and instructors is achieved through musical and social behavior rather than titles and résumés.
How do I apply?
We will open for applications during the spring.
At Jazzdalen, there is room for musical experimentation and immersion in what inspires you.
