Sounds of Denmark – new Danish jazz festival in London
I september 2016 afholder JazzDanmark en ugelang festival i London med en stærk række af danske artister, som netop er udvalgt efter et open call-forløb.
In September 2016, JazzDanmark will host a week-long festival in London featuring a strong lineup of Danish artists, which has now been finalized following an open call process. The Sounds of Denmark festival will take place at the renowned Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho and will present a total of 10 Danish ensembles to a British audience.
The project is an ambitious Danish jazz initiative in the UK, marking an exciting new musical collaboration between the two nations. The Pizza Express Jazz Club is known for ‘breaking’ artists in England before anyone else: both Gregory Porter and Norah Jones made their debuts at PizzaExpress Live. The project is a collaboration between the venue, Sue Edwards Management, and the Danish Embassy in London.
More than 30 Danish Musicians in London
During the seven-day festival, music from over 30 Danish musicians will be performed as they travel to London to represent Denmark’s energetic jazz scene. The program consists of 10 ensembles, all of which have gone through an extensive selection process in collaboration with a British jury. The open call attracted a wide range of high-quality and artistically diverse applications. The jury has crafted a program that reflects this, showcasing a mix of established, internationally experienced artists as well as younger, emerging bands.
It is our hope that this project will create a ripple effect for the entire Danish jazz scene, allowing more Danish artists in the future to establish themselves in the important British market.
