Sounds of Denmark Returns to the UK

Three Danish names will take the stage when the Sounds of Denmark festival returns to England in both London and Southampton this March. In London, the legendary Pizza Express Jazz Club will once again host both concerts and a reception, while the large regional venue Turner Sims will host the concert in Southampton. Sounds of Denmark will take place from March 19–21, 2024, and will feature Lis Wessberg ‘Yellow Map’, Abekejser feat. Karmen Rõivassepp, and Nikolaj Hess & Carsten Dahl.

Danish Jazz at Legendary Venues in England

This year’s program has been selected by our English partners. The program ranges from cinematic trombone-led jazz with Lis Wessberg ‘Yellow Map’, through danceable and soulful jazztronica with Abekejser and Karmen Rõivassepp, to a unique duet performance by two true piano maestros, Carsten Dahl and Nikolaj Hess.

  • Lis Wessberg ‘Yellow Map’ performs at Pizza Express Jazz Club in London on March 19, 2024, and at Turner Sims in Southampton on March 20, 2024.
  • Abekejser & Karmen Rõivassepp perform at Pizza Express Jazz Club in London on March 20, 2024.
  • Carsten Dahl & Nikolaj Hess (Steinway 2-piano Festival) perform at Pizza Express Jazz Club in London on March 21, 2024.

Background of Sounds of Denmark

Sounds of Denmark, which has existed since 2016, is an ambitious Danish jazz project in the UK carried out in a strong partnership between the two nations. The Sounds of Denmark festival first took place in London in 2016 and has consistently succeeded in gaining visibility in British media, as well as creating new opportunities and collaborative relationships for the participating musicians. The goal of Sounds of Denmark is to promote Danish jazz in the UK. Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho, London, is known for spotting new talent and being an important step toward a breakthrough in the British market. Turner Sims in Southampton became a partner in 2022.
