Strong partnership between Denmark and the UK
Three bands will perform live at the Sounds of Denmark festival, which returns to England this year in both London and Southampton.
Sounds of Denmark Returns
After being canceled for the past two years due to Covid-19, the Danish jazz festival Sounds of Denmark is making a return. This time, the festival will feature two venue partners: the legendary Pizza Express Jazz Club in London, which will once again host both concerts and a reception, and the large regional venue Turner Sims in Southampton, which, in addition to a Danish jazz night, will also coordinate school concerts with the Danish bands.
Sounds of Denmark will take place from September 14–16, 2022, and will present three ensembles: Bévort 3, RKDIA, and Svaneborg Kardyb. The festival is a testament to the resurgence of the British market after challenges related to both Brexit and the pandemic.
New Partnership in Newcastle
Following a fruitful visit program in Copenhagen in 2019 for partners from the UK jazz promoter organization JPN, a new partnership with the Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music has now come to fruition. This year, the festival has curated two Danish ensembles—Maniscalco/Bigoni/Solborg and Czajka & Puchacz—and will also present Mark Solborg in a solo concert.
The Danish ensembles will perform at the Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music on September 29–30, 2022. Czajka & Puchacz will also perform at Café Oto in London on September 28, 2022.
About Sounds of Denmark
Sounds of Denmark, which has existed since 2016, is an ambitious Danish jazz project in the UK, carried out through a strong partnership between the two nations. The Sounds of Denmark festival first took place in London in 2016 and has consistently succeeded in gaining visibility in British media, as well as creating new opportunities and collaborative relationships for the participating musicians. Since 2019, JazzDanmark has been working intensively across the UK through a three-year promoter and PR project, which is an expansion of the Sounds of Denmark concept.
Partners and Supporters
JazzDanmark’s efforts in the UK are carried out in collaboration with Sue Edwards Management, as well as changing venue, festival, and PR partners. Support has been obtained from the Danish Arts Foundation’s Project Support Committee for Music and the International Cultural Panel (IKP), which is an overarching collaborative forum consisting of the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Business. The Danish Embassy in London is a partner for the opening reception, which will take place on September 15, 2022, in London, with participation from the newly appointed Danish Ambassador, as well as relevant partners and stakeholders from both Denmark and England.
