Summer Session 2024 is ready to open up a week full of inspiration, immersion and musical training at the highest international level. The jazz convention gathers a faculty consisting of seven skilled instructors from several jazz generations and styles and is now ready to accept applications from professional musicians.

The event takes place as usual at Krogerup Højskole. This year from 4 to 10 August. Registration is open now and runs until Sunday, May 26.

Faculty from several jazz generations

The faculty this year consists of eight instructors divided into six combos. In the selection, the Summer Session team has, among other things, looked towards directors who represent diversity both in their stylistic expression but also across jazz generations. The Summer Session 2024 faculty consists of Mary Halvorson, Kresten Osgood + Mat Maneri, David Murray, Kanoa Mendenhall, Billy Hart and Seb Rochford + AC.

Mary Halvorson

Mary Halvorson has been called one of the most original jazz guitarists of recent times and among the most in-demand guitarists in New York for the past two decades. A demand that has resulted in collaborations with various names such as Anthony Braxton, Trevor Dunn, Bill Frisell, Ingrid Laubrock and John Zorn.

Kanoa Mendenhall

Bassist Kanoa Mendenhall has, among other things, studied bass with Ron Carter at The Juilliard School. After Mendenhall graduated, she toured internationally with vibraphonist Joel Ross’ Good Vibes and saxophonist/singer Maria Grand’s trio. Mendenhall has also contributed to Joel Ross’s last two releases.

Billy Hart

Legendary drummer Billy Hart has performed with some of the most important jazz musicians in history. Early in his career, Hart performed in Washington, D.C. with soul artists such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave, and later with Buck Hill and Shirley Horn, and he was a sideman with The Montgomery Brothers, Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery.

Hart moved to New York in 1968, where he recorded with McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul, and played with Eddie Harris, Pharoah Sanders and Marian McPartland. Hart was a member of Herbie Hancock’s sextet and played with McCoy Tyner, Stan Getz and Quest. He leads the Billy Hart Quartet with Mark Turner, Ethan Iverson and Ben Street, which has released two albums on ECM Records.

David Murray

Saxophonist David Murray has a long and impressive CV that counts hundreds of releases, both under his own name and as a sideman. The list includes collaborations with McCoy Tyner, Jack DeJohnette and former Summer Session directors James Blood Ulmer, Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Terri Lyne Carrington. Murray also received the Danish Jazzpar Prize in 1991.

Kresten Osgood+Mat Maneri

Composer and violinist Mat Maneri from Brooklyn, New York has recorded as a leader since 1996 for, among others, ECM Records. He has also played with, among others, Cecil Taylor, Paul Motian and many more.

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Kresten Osgood is a musical recluse. For him, improvisation is a central part of his musical work, and together the two musicians will lead a combo that will undoubtedly play on all keys and instruments.

Seb Rochford + Anders ‘AC’ Christensen

British drummer and composer Sebastian Rochford achieved international acclaim as part of the experimental and electronic jazz outfit Polar Bear and has since collaborated with the likes of David Byrne, Brian Eno and Nadine Shah, as well as being a touring drummer for Patti Smith . Rochford has also played drums for Herbie Hancock, Acoustic Ladyland, Baquiat Strongs, Oriole, Menlo Park, Ingrid Laubrock Quintet, Bojan Zulfikarpasic’s Tetraband and was a founding member of Sons of Kemet.

Throughout his years on the jazz scene, AC has been part of prominent projects such as Tomasz Stanko’s quintet, Jakob Bro’s trio, Paul Motian’s The Electric Bepob Band and has played with musicians such as Tom Harrell, Joe Lovano and Lee Konitz among many others. His own trio consisted of drummer Paul Motian, pianist Aaron Parks and AC on bass. In addition to being a pioneer on the jazz scene, AC has also played in several rock bands such as Sort Sol and The Raveonettes.
