Summer Session broadens the horizon and opens for applications

Summer Session 2023 is ready to open up a week full of musical inspiration and immersion at the highest international level! The jazz convention brings together a faculty consisting of seven skilled instructors from as many as four continents and is now ready to accept applications from professional musicians.

The event takes place as usual at Krogerup Højskole and runs from 6 – 12 August. Registration is open now and runs until the deadline on Friday 19 May.

Faculty from four continents

The faculty this year consists of seven instructors divided into six combos – drawn from four continents. In the selection, the Summer Session team looked at both the USA, South Africa and Japan, but also at closer regions than usual.

Of particular note, Midori Takada and Jakob Bro will handle a combo together. The duo arose in connection with JazzDanmark’s Asia project, has performed together both in Europe and Asia and has garnered international acclaim. Bro must be said to be the country’s most recognized jazz musician over the past few decades, and Midori Takada is considered a pioneer in ambient minimalism.

On the whole, the outlook is wider than ever. The Summer Session 2023 faculty consists of Audun Kleive, Ingrid Laubrock, Nduduzo Makhathini, Midori Takada + Jakob Bro, Joel Ross and Skúli Sverrisson. The faculty is composed of the artistic management, which consists of Nikolaj Hess, Mikkel Hess and Anders “AC” Christensen.

Midori Takada + Jakob Bro (JP + DK)
As a composer and percussionist, Midori Takada has made his mark both with solo releases and in collaboration with others. Takada’s magnum opus Through the Looking Glass was reissued in 2017 and hailed as an ambient minimalist masterpiece. This combo will take place together with Jakob Bro as co-director. Jakob’s musical CV speaks for itself, and most recently Midori and Jakob have given several concerts together.

Ingrid Laubrock (DE)
German saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock released her first album under her own name in 1998, and since then there have been more than 20 releases with Ingrid as bandleader or co-bandleader. Her collaborations include musicians such as Kris Davis, Tyshawn Sorey, Ralph Alessi, Craig Taborn and Tom Rainey.

Audun Kleive (NO)
The drummer Audun Kleive has participated in more than 150 releases during his 40-year career. Audun’s first years were as part of the Norwegian jazz-rock groups Lotus and Oslo 13 and he quickly became part of the Norwegian nu-jazz scene. Over the years he has played with people like Jon Balke, Pettre Wettre, Bugge Wesseltoft, Terje Rypdal and Marilyn Mazur.

Joel Ross (US)
Since Joel Ross released his debut album on Blue Note in 2019, he has developed into one of the most exciting American vibraphonists. Since his debut, Joel has performed with, among others, Makaya McCraven, Peter Evans, Melissa Aldana and Immanuel Wilkins.

Nduduzo Makhathini (ZA)
Nduduzo Makhathini’s Blue Note debut Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds was called one of 2020’s best jazz releases by The New York Times. Before his debut at Blue Note, the South African pianist has won a host of awards in his home country, including jazz artist of the year in 2019 and jazz release of the year two years in a row.

Skúli Sverrisson (IS)
The Icelandic bass player, Skúli Sverrisson, has appeared on more than 100 releases as well as written works for film and theatre. In his time he has worked with everything from Wadada Leo Smith, Jim Black and Chris Speed to Ryuichi Sakamoto, Johann Johannsson, Lou Reed and Blonde Redhead.

Summer Session’s target group
