Svaneborg Kardyb wins first ever version of Jazzkonkurrencen 2019
The first edition of JazzDanmark’s new music competition for musicians under 30 found its winner on Saturday evening at a sold-out final at Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen. The winner was Svaneborg Kardyb.
It was packed to the brim at the legendary Copenhagen venue Jazzhus Montmartre, which hosted the first edition of Jazzkonkurrencen on Saturday evening. The final was between the piano trio North and the duo Svaneborg Kardyb, and by the end of the evening, the jury selected Svaneborg Kardyb as the winner.

The evening’s concert consisted of a set from each finalist. The trio North (Benjamin Nørholm, piano; Martin Brunbjerg, bass; and Lasse Jacobsen, drums) played the first set and impressed the jury with a “musical universe filled with groove, playfulness, and communication at its core, along with a well-thought-out stage performance and style.”
This year’s jury consisted of pianist Makiko Hirabayashi, Kat Jarby from Kaja MANAGEMENT, and the former winner of Ung Jazz and trumpet player from Det Glemte Kvarter, Mikkel Grevsen.
As previously mentioned, the winners were the duo Svaneborg Kardyb (Nikolaj Svaneborg, Wurlitzer and piano, and Jonas Kardyb, drums), who enchanted both the audience and the jury with their dreamy, groovy universe.
Part of the jury’s reasoning for their decision was as follows: “The winning band has found the essence of their own sound and delivers it with confidence. They presented beautiful melodies with organic transitions, an electronic vibe, and a subdued coolness. They boldly introduced us to minimalism with clear artistic surplus, delivering a fantastic, organic groove and interplay that was both elastic and dynamic.”
A big congratulations to Svaneborg Kardyb on the award!

“We are very happy and proud to win! It’s wonderful to be part of a competition where so much is done for the music and the musicians. This is a lovely recognition of what we work on daily, and the victory and the whole experience give us the desire and courage to continue working with our music!”

“And it was also a great experience, where we got to know the other bands, both as people and musically. All in all, it was a really awesome experience!”

Svaneborg Kardyb can look forward to receiving a prize of 10,000 DKK, as well as the opportunity to perform at the EBU Jazz Competition, which will take place in Copenhagen during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
The finalists have gone through a process where they received mentoring from relevant industry professionals. A performance coach assessed their live performances, and they received PR training from experienced PR consultants. Additionally, the bands participated in video sessions, and both bands have been featured on Jazzoom on P8 Jazz.
Last week, both finalists visited Jazzoom on P8 with Jonas Visti.
Jazzkonkurrencen is supported by the Gangsted Foundation and created in collaboration with Huset i Hasserisgade, Jazz6000, and Jazzhus Montmartre.
