This Summer’s jazz camps are just around the corner

Jazz musicians’ summer calendars aren’t filled with festivals alone. The season also offers two of Jazz Danmark’s popular summer camps: Jazzdalen and Summer Session.

From July 27 to August 2, around 70 young musicians from across Denmark will gather at Klejtrup Musikefterskole in Hobro for the summer camp Jazzdalen. Later in the season, it’s the professionals’ turn, as Jazz Danmark’s Summer Session fills Krogerup Højskole with jazz musicians from around the world from August 3–9.

A community for young musical talent

Jazzdalen is aimed at musicians under the age of 18 and focuses on nurturing the next generation of Danish jazz artists. Through a week of ensemble playing, inspiration, and community, participants will have the chance to grow musically in a safe and supportive environment, guided by some of Denmark’s most experienced jazz musicians.

The camp emphasizes diversity and balanced gender representation—and offers everything from ensemble sessions and workshops to concerts and camaraderie in beautiful natural surroundings.

Jazzdalen is organized by Jazz Danmark in collaboration with Klejtrup Musikefterskole and drummer Kristoffer Juel. The event takes place from July 27 to August 2 and is supported by the Danish Arts Foundation, Spar Nord Foundation, Ole Kirk’s Foundation, the Toyota Foundation, the Knud Højgaard Foundation, and the Nordea Foundation.

A legendary gathering for professional musicians

Jazz Danmark’s Summer Session is Northern Europe’s largest continuing education program for professional jazz musicians—and over the years, it has become a cornerstone of Danish jazz culture. At Krogerup Højskole, a strong field of professional musicians come together to work intensively in ensembles, inspired and guided by a world-class international faculty.

This year’s faculty includes Arooj Aftab, Luques Curtis, María Grand, Julia Hülsmann, Nasheet Waits, Elena Pinderhughes, and Gilad Hekselman, who will co-lead a combo together.

Participants work in fixed groups, but instructors rotate throughout the week to ensure everyone has the opportunity to collaborate across ensembles and learn from the entire faculty. Summer Session takes place August 3–9 and is made possible with support from the Danish Arts Foundation, the Augustinus Foundation, the Beckett Foundation, KODA Culture, the Toyota Foundation, the Goethe-Institut, and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
